Can of Cardines Documentary, 2025.
If you’ve ever taken the Hayvenhurst exit off of the 101 Freeway, you might’ve caught your eye on an unexpected landmark: a captivating mural underneath the freeway overpass. This mural, aptly titled Can of Cardines, was created by Sandy Bleifer in 1975, and has served as a recognizable fixture to generations of Angelenos commuting through Encino for nearly five decades.
This short documentary centers on Bleifer, her art practice, and the methodologies that informed the creation of Can of Cardines. With her guidance, the mural was conserved by Site and Studio Conservation in 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the public artwork, allowing it to be enjoyed by the public for many years to come.
